Rebecca Holden - Artist At Work
"I had a ball thank you Caroline. For someone who doesn't like being in front of the camera you made it a fun experience. The photos you took were awesome!"
Last week I was excited to be photographing local artist, Rebecca Holden in her studio. A friend of mine showed me Rebecca's work online and I just loved her use of colour in her paintings and have followed and even purchased some of her work since. Some of you may have also seen a recent exhibition in Expressions, Upper Hutt of a personal project where she sketched a face everyday during lockdown.
Below is some of Rebecca's artwork and a couple of shots of her in action. She places the coloured paper directly onto her artwork to help decide where she would like to add colour to highlight or recede an area. "You really start to see colour in the shadows and highlights", (instead of light and dark).
Rebecca gets her inspiration from various avenues, including the Brothers Grimm fairy tales which she has done extensive research on. The painting below was inspired by one of those tales. Of course, her mask was rather enticing for a photograph and didn't take much to encourage her to put it on for a few shots! As Rebecca says, "For a fox knows how to best approach a fox"!
Rebecca's sketch book below shows one of the many sketches; some tools of the trade; and a moment of standing back to view progress.
A moment of contemplation...
Thanks Rebecca for giving me the opportunity to photograph you in your studio, it was really interesting watching you in your space. To check out more of Rebecca's artwork head to https://rebeccaholden.co.nz and for her instagram account @rebeccaholdenartist.
And one last photograph...
