Light creates mood creating a feeling within us. That may be joyful, sad, contemplative, warm, cool, even uncomfortable. When looking at photographs these same feelings will surface when looking at them.
A photographer aims to create a certain feeling which is mainly directed by the placement of light. With the image above, only having part of the boy in direct light creates a certain feeling in the viewer. How does this image make you feel? May be the image feels mysterious, sad, pensive. Even slightly uncomfortable if you like children to look joyful in photographs! You might be surprised to learn this image was taken in summer in late afternoon, it was a hot bright day.
The light (and lack of flash) have created a feeling of warmth for a joyous occasion here. The wood walls and ceilings & the colour of the clothing have helped project a warmth in to the photo too. This could just have easily been a sterile shot if flash had been used creating a more daylight feel.
This image was taken in a home with a lot of light, it's lovely and bright to walk into. I really wanted an intimate looking shot for this though. The kids are facing a large window so their faces are nicely lit, and standing to the side looking down on the newborn gave a wee bit more of an intimate feeling. Does it feel cosy and intimate to you?
The light, giving a golden glow to the faces of the family looking at the newborn was slightly to the left of me. The golden glow directs the focus to the faces looking at the newborn baby. It's a quiet moment with the sister touching the baby and Dad giving her a reassuring kiss on head. The softness of the light enhances the tender moment.
Golden morning light and autumn colour give this family a warm glow to match their happy faces. Morning and evening light are the best time for portraits if you are after a really warm feeling to your photographs.
The light falling on this gorgeous ladies face is flat lighting. Flat lighting is always great for nice skin tone, and doesn't create harsh shadows. This was taken late afternoon on an overcast summer evening giving a beautiful warmth.
